Related to that....I saw The Day After Tomorrow on Saturday. It was great! Totally not what I expected, which was some watered-down plot hiding behind huge special effects. It definitely had the latter, but the plot and the acting were solid and actually made for a "real" movie. But here is a related problem I have. I read this article on cnn.com and was seriously bothered.
Let me preface my rant by saying that I thought the "violence" in the movie was perfectly balanced. I tend to find too much violence and destruction overkill in a movie and maldaptive to enjoying the experience, albeit some do enjoy gore and blood and so on, I don't begrudge them their desires. I prefer the Shakespearean/Greek methodology of having the violence and bloodshed happening "offstage" in order to incite a mind's creative imagination. The imagined horror is often worse than what can be shown on screen. I am digressing....
I have a problem with recent events making filmmakers feel like they need to change their movie goals and/or censor their ideas in the name of sensitivity and not stepping on people's toes. In this country, you can't fart without someone wanting to sue you. To say that it would be in bad taste completely flies against the first amendment. Surprise, right? I am not that naive. The 1st Amendment has been made into a joke in this country....as have other tenets. Again, what Emmerich does in the movie is great. I didn't find the violence/bloodshed lacking. It worked well, but to worry about all the trivialities is ridiculous. I am not denying recent actions or lessening the horror of it for anyone. But their is a delineation between reality and fiction and if you don't think you can handle it because it might evoke recent memories, then don't involve yourself in that situation. Plain and simple. SOMEONE is ALWAYS going to get pissed off, no matter how noble and carefully planned your intentions.
Oh good lord....
I just saw a segment on the news about Song airlines new promotion: when they see a customer helping out another one, they will reward them with a free airline ticket. Why? This is in response to the fact that when some customers have problems, like at baggage or are injured, people ignore them. So to elicit more "kind" behavior...a free ticket. How noble indeed....but how sick that you have to reward someone for being human and sensitive. Not saying that we should kow tow to everyone's need and ailments (god forbid someone should get sued for helping the handicapped under the pretense of discrimination), but come on, simple gestures of assistance are not THAT difficult.
I am in a pissed off mood. Obviously. Things are bothering me. I miss the elf. Had a lovely dinner tonight with the "Family."
Am I too culturally sensitive?
