So the country is celebrating it's independance and notions of freedom (ha ha ha), fireworks are going off outside (fucking ghetto-ass kids), and I am inside watching Cold Mountain which highlights The Civil War, itself a mockery of American idealism and freedom rights. The Civil War is so representative and echoes so many of the problems we face today. I won't get on my soapbox tonight about this. I just find it equally as ironic that the movie is anchored by ASTOUNDING performances.....by British and Australian actors....portraying Americans.....during a very important period of American life and history....playing such indelible types and myths inherent and important to the American culture and mythos....and doing it better than any American actor. Although Renee Zellweger (Miss Pucker "I Just Sucked on a Lemon" Face) gives an amazing performance as does Philip Seymour Hoffman (when does he never?). But the irony? The Americans in the movie play the less-than-desirable character types in terms of cultural intelligence and grooming and behaviour, if that makes any sense. Just a fun, fun evening. And I don't feel that I missed anything.
Ah yes, next semester....I am a bitch to teaching.
