Religion and Motherhood
I know, how random. First, the brief rant.
The Hillsborough County School Board in response to the Muslim community wanting Eid recognized as a religious holiday and placed on the calendar decided to remove all school holidays from the calendar (I assume this also meant no time off). This, of course, angered all those little bible thumpers who at the meeting chastised board members for forgetting their creator and pardoning themselves for getting so emotional for talking about their lord and savior Jesus Christ. So the board revoted, reinstated the traditional holidays and told the Muslims, "Too bad."
Now, no one in their right mind would or should think that removing the holidays was not premeditated to get that response and use it as fodder for not allowing the "other" into the system. Don't even begin to tell me this is not about religious discrimination, not to mention cultural marginalization and ethnocentrism. And this is not about my defending one religion over the other because I disagree with overzealous Muslims who do the same to other religions in their own territory where they are the majority just as much as I disagreee with overzealous Christians who think their shit never stinks. But if you are going to found your society on and tout the whole melting pot theory, you can't go denying differing cultures their rights, traditions and practices because you are not sure if there are enough muslim students in schools to justify the holiday inclusion. Just what IS the right amount? And how does that reasoning even make ANY sense?
We are living in a culture of primal idiocy.
Connected to that is a trend I have noticed on TV lately. For some reason, I have gotten into watching court shows like "Judge Judy" and "Divorce Court." I don't know why, but I like them. What bothers me and what I know has been a trend and is an even more growing one is the use of children by one parent against another. I think that is despicable and horrible and proof that some people do NOT need to have children, should never get custody, and need to go through a psych-eval.
In one case, a mother accused her husband and then her boyfriend of rape and in the first case turned the daughter against the father by making her believe she (the daughter) was molested by him. Neither of the two charges were real. She used the kid and her lies to gain full custody and money. Those children need saving. In another case, a mother spoke ill of the father and his family and the stepmother to make the child hate them because the birth mother was this bittered hag with way to much time on her hands.
I just DO NOT understand how parents have the nerve to use children as weapons. Throughout my parents' arguments, separation and eventual divorce they NEVER used me to gain favor or to spit venom. Hell, they were all about not trying to keep me informed - which never worked. They kept their crap to themselves because they realized that the possibility of damaging me would be worse than anything they could do to each other. While the situation may have influenced me, they never once tried to make me hate the other.
If your child is not old enough to know any better and not old enough to rationally make their own conclusion, WHY would you want to fuck them up and psychologically abuse them because that is just what it is....abuse.
Just one of the many reasons why we have such ill-adjusted adults in the world today. If we need a license to drive a car and carry a gun, we sure as hell need a license to have children because they can end up more dangerous than a car or a gun when they are adults.
